Vintage Ceil Chapman Classic Black Marilyn Monroe Dress in excellent condition! Wow - the first Ceil we've ever had at the shop, this one does NOT disappoint!!! Stunning silk grosgrain material is pleated and tucked, looped and folded in ways I can't even comprehend. From bottom to top: mid-calf length open slit skirt rises up to envelop the hips, cinches at the waist for the most incredible hourglass, perfectly cradling the rib cage and ultimately scalloping at the shoulders, with a tulle underlayer peeking out, just right. Good gravy this is stunning. Ceil was apparently Marilyn's fave designer back in the day. Approx. size XS (unmarked) measures approx.:

Authenticity
Every piece at The Curatorial Dept. has a story, and we make sure it’s a true one.
All designer items are carefully authenticated by our in-house team of costumers, designers, and stylists, who’ve spent years examining everything from vintage Issey Miyake pleats to current-season Chanel. We vet labels, stitching, fabric, provenance, and even gut instinct (it’s a thing). When necessary, we use authentication services like Entrupy. If you ever have a question about an item’s authenticity, reach out - we’re happy to share the receipts, metaphorically and literally. Need more reassurance? We’ve been selling online since the 1990s, and you can see our thousands of (100% positive!) feedback ratings on eBay here.
Shipping & Returns
All in-store purchases are Final Sale and cannot be returned. Online purchases may be returned for store credit only, less a 15% restocking fee, if they’re postmarked within 7 days of delivery. Returned items must be in their original condition - unworn, unwashed, and with all tags attached. Items not postmarked within 7 days will become the sole property of The Curatorial Dept. Return shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer.

Because we’re a consignment-based shop, our business model requires that we pay consignors shortly after each sale. Once that payment or credit goes out, it’s not possible to reverse the transaction. Accepting returns makes our bookkeeping (and frankly, our sanity) shall we say… complicated. Thank you for your understanding!

Sizing & Tailoring
Within one or two sizes, size doesn’t really matter. Truly. Our expert team, comprised of costumers, stylists, and other fashion pros can help you let out, take in, hem, or tweak most garments so they fit you, not the size tag. Vintage and even some designer sizing varies wildly, so think of numbers as loose suggestions, not rules. If you love it, we’ll help you make it work.
Studio Services
The Curatorial Dept. isn’t just a store, it’s a style laboratory. We offer wardrobe consulting, closet edits, and studio pulls for stylists, film & TV productions, and creative projects. Whether you’re a costume designer, a stylist, or just ready to reimagine your look, email us to set up a session.
Layaway
We get it - some pieces deserve a slow burn. Our layaway option lets you reserve an item with a 30% deposit and pay the remainder over 30 days. Layaway items must be paid in full within that window, and deposits are non-refundable.
Consignment
We very rarely buy from the public, but if you have standout, rare, collectible, or otherwise exciting pieces that suit our store (please review our website or shop first!), we occasionally take on new consignors for store credit only. To submit items, book a consignment appointment or send photos via our website form. We prioritize items that fit our mix of story, quality, and design integrity - because the best pieces deserve a second act.
